John's new band The Mo-Chi Quartet
Hi Friends,
For a year or so I have been thinking about going into different directions musically. Don't get me wrong, WorlView has been my heart and soul for the past six years and it's been a total joy. Playing with WorlView at the Monterey Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, SF Jazz's Stanford Clock Tower series, BoAs, Bleu Ginger, Senzala and the many other venues we performed in has been a dream come true. But now it's time for a change. I've been called restless by a writer or two for my creation of Bari Bari, forays into producing a music series at Senzala and my collaborations with many of the bay area's respected musicians. The Mo-Chi Quartet expresses my desire to dive into new musical territories, revisit the music of my heritage and bring to life the dreams of tomorrow. Like all new endeavors, it is exciting to watch it unfold and grow.
The Mo-Chi Quartet will be playing at the beautiful D'Vine Jazz and Wine on Fri
(9/24) and Sat (9/25). Some of you who have been to D'Vine Jazz and Wine in Morgan Hill are familiar with their reputation for serving outstanding wine and appetizers as well as great LIVE MUSIC. Linda and Ricardo have created the perfect place to sip, nosh, relax and enjoy jazz. It's one of my favorite places and I'm hoping that you will stop by to support such an awesome venue. It is right off the Cochrane Rd. exit from Hwy 101 - a short drive from San Jose, not crowded at that time of the evening!
There is NO cover charge, just a 2 drink minimum. You may enjoy live music in an adult atmosphere (Date night!) and your budget will not suffer!
We'll be playing from 8-11pm each night. We will be performing numbers from our concert material and the Great American Songbook as well.
On Friday, we'll have Murray Low on piano, Ken Okada on bass and Kevin Higuchi on drums.
On Saturday, keyboardist Brian Ho will be sitting in for Murray along with Ken, Kevin and me.
A reminder: D'Vine Jazz and Wine is a 21 and over venue. There is no Cover Charge, only a two drink minimum.
On Sunday 9/26 at City Lights Theater in San Jose, San Jose Jazz Showcase presents The Mo-Chi Quartet. For this concert, we will be playing compositions from members of the group, arrangements of various Japanese folk songs and tunes by writers such as Bob James, Tom Harrell and others. This concert is open to all ages so the kids can come out and experience our music as well. I cannot say enough about exposing the youth of our country to the arts - especially now that so much has been cut from their school budgets. The arts are critical for their development and provide experiences that can be life enhancing - and sometimes even life changing - for young people!
The cover charge is only $15 and just $13 for San Jose Jazz members. Students under 15 get in free when accompanied by a adult. Please visit City Lights website if you'd like to purchase tickets in advance.
In case you are new to this venue, City Lights Theater has a nice feel to it. The background is always different depending on what show is playing at the moment. Acoustics are great and it's an intimate venue, just right for a quartet. I love the way the flugelhorn tone opens up and envelops the room. Almost like it was made for the horn ; )>.........
We hope that you can come out and be a part of something special...........

What I Love.....
Hi Friends,
So many people these days only focus on the things in life that are negative. As of late, I've been affected in the same way. I can blame it on so many things but the truth is....Happiness comes from within. We can generate our happiness and lead the fulfilled lives that we all seek.
I need to remember that. Happiness comes from love. Who, what, where and how are what we love...it's different for everyone..These are the things I love.........
I love my wife. Totally without boundries. I love my friends. They are important to my sanity. I love to play with my band. They are the cats I love to play with because they are fine people first and kick ass musicians second. I love to be on stage, talking with the audience as if they were in my living room. I love seeing and hearing young students play and get better from week to week, month to month, year to year.......I love to write music. I also love to tinker on the piano. I love to hike at Rancho San Antonio. I love the way I feel when I'm standing on top of the mountain looking down at where I was and now am.....
I love seeing others around me sharing a laugh, being social and enjoying each others company. I love being able to help a friend in need when times are tough. I love period.
I love once again...period. This is what I need to focus on. I love myself.....The world isn't perfect, but I love living in it.
I remember telling a friend awhile ago that he had to stop calling me so much. Why was that you might ask....it was because all he wanted to share was how someone ripped him off, another person was an asshole, how he got over another person who had screwed him over etc....I told him that I was removing all of the negative influences in my life and if he wanted to stay my friend, he had to think about how I felt. Nothing on his part changed....I cut him loose. I didn't have time for it or him.
To be that true to myself, it's that time again. Time to take back some of my time and spiritual resources. It will set me free to do and be what I feel and that is to do things because I love to do them.
I want myself to know that I am going to play tennis again because that makes happy and fulfilled. I'm also going to continue to write music but more of it. I will have to remove some obstacles in my way from a time perspective but I can because I can control my schedule to make it happen. Because I love to write music and by doing so, I am listening to what my soul wants to express and share with the world.....
I want to dance with my wife Susan because of the smile she has when she is connected to me on the dance floor. The feeling of our beings entertwined into one. Of how it sets our souls free from time and imaginary walls that keep us from doing what we love together.
For those of you who know me.....thank you for your love and patience. I feel the same towards you too. For the negative influences around me....your time has come...I gonna have to cut you....loose....
Thanks for listening.
